Film, as an art form, is as polyphonic as the adjectives it attracts. Sharp and imposing on the tongue, the German term ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, proposed by Joseph Wagner, describes the total fusion of the arts in film—from music, writing, and directing—to its most basic distillation: the still image. Tanya Babić and Jason Sukadana, curators of the upcoming Additional Assets: Photographs by Filmmakers exhibition at m2 Gallery, navigate this transformation and explore its manifestations found in the "fragments that sometimes sit between takes, on reccess, travels or even between ideas".
Additional Assets emerged from the understanding that filmmakers are inherently multi-skilled, polymathic storytellers whose visual language naturally extends into other modes of expression. It features an impressive range of visionaries including Justin Kurzel, Mandy Walker. Responding to the modern visual culture ravaged by "new technologies and synthetic imagery", as described by Babić, the show is "an act of creative and cultural preservation, a reminder of the enduring power of perspective, authorship, and intent.”
Generously supported by partners Electric Sheep Music, Additional Assets: Photographs by Filmmakers opens Thursday 23rd October, 6pm - 9pm at m2 Gallery, Surry Hills.
